• Daimler/Klemm L15

  Historical Data:
  The L15 was Klemm's first aircraft designed after WW I. The development was started in 1919 at Daimler automobile factory, which was headed by Hanns Klemm. It was equipped with an Indian motor cycle engine. In 1920 the aircraft crashed and was rebuilt as a glider aircraft. Later it was reconstructed as a engined-powered aircraft again with a Harley-Davidson motor cycle engine. The single built L15 was used until the mid-20s and was later transfered to the Deutsches Museum, Munich for exhibition A seaplane version was developed as L15W, equipped with light metal swimmers in 1924. The L15W was single-seated and took of first on October, 9th, 1924 from Bodensee. A further improved L15Wa again was double-seated.

  The L18 was a further improved L15 with smaller wings and a single seat. The aircraft was equipped with a Harley-Davidson motor cycle engine. As the L15, also the L18 was provided as a seaplane version under the designator L18W. The seaplane version was equipped with a Daimler F46756 engine.

  Historical Data:
  The L20 was the first sucessfull Klemm aircraft, which was serial produced. The initial prototypes were equipped with Harley Davidson motor cycle engines, as well as with Daimler F6902 and F46756. Also test flights in glider versions were performed with the prototypes. The center wing section and fuselage had a fixed connection, while the outer wings could be mounted to the center wing section with four screws. Also the tail unit could be seperated from the fuselage for better transportation on the ground.
  
  The serial production series L20A1 was equipped with a Daimler F7502 in 1924. Since 1925 the L20B and L20B1 went under construction. This aircraft type was very successfull in several contests during the next years. In 1927 a Klemm L20B won the light aircraft contest at Brussels. On March, 24th 1927 a Klemm L20B achieved an altitude record of 6000 metres and during the same year a distance record of 1305 km was flown with a L20B1 The L20B2 was equipped with a Salmson AD9 engine instead of the Daimler F7502 of the L20B1.
  
  The L20C was single seated and was equipped with a smaller wing than the L20A/B. The L20C1 as well as the seaplane version L20C2W were equipped with Daimler F7502, while the L20C1W still had the Daimler F46756 engine. Only a few of the C-series were built. Based on the C-series were the L20D1. It was also single seated and both the land version D1, as well as the seaplane version D1W were equipped with the Daimler F7502 engine. A seaplane variante of the D-series was designated D2W with Salmson AD9 engine.

• Daimler/Klemm L21

  Historical Data:
  The L21 was speically designed for a contest of Berliner Zeitung in 1925. As the regulations for this flight contest required a minimum power of 29kW, Klemm decided to equip his aircraft with two Daimler F7502a (17,5 kW each). The engines were mounted at the wing. Two aircraft were built for the BZ contest and won in 1925 in their grouping.

  The L22 was an improved L20 aircraft, which was developed for increased speed in 1927 Like the L20, the L22 was also equipped with F7502 engines, but got a new aerodynamic styling with oval fuselage and covered undercarriage. In 1929 the L22 was reengined with a Salmson AD9 engine and designated as L22a. During the 30s the KL22 was equippe with a Hirth HM60 engine. This aircraft also got a cabin roof. A KL22 was the winner of the Austrian Round-the-Alps flight of 1933

• Klemm L25 and VL25

  Historical Data:
  The L25 was a further improvement of the L20B. It was designed by Klemm and Lusser in 1927. Instead of the fabric covering of the fuselage, most parts of the L25 consisted of wooden panels. The aircraft was built between 1927 and 1939 in different variants known as L25a to L25e. Several engine manufacturers were selected for the L25. They are indicated by Roman numbers following the serial designator:

  Initial L25 was equipped with a Mercedes F7502 like the previous L20. Like on the L20, also the L25 had two seats, which were arranged behind each other. Typical for L25-prototype was the common cutout for these two seats. This changed on the L25I, which was built since 1928 and which was equipped with a Salmson AD9. Instead of the turnable wingtips of the L20 and L25 prototype, the L25I was first equipped with rudders on the wing. The L25I was also built as a seaplane as L25IW. Special contest versions of the L25I were developed as L25EI with smaller wing and L25EIb with original wing span in 1930. As L25EV and L25EVa these aircraft were equipped with Argus As8.
  
  The L25aI, also built since 1928 with Salmson AD9 engines was the standard L25-series. This type was very successfull on several European contests in the late 20s. On April, 11th 1930 Magarete Fusbahn achieved a new altitude record with a L25aI with 4614 metres and on Spetember, 4th 1930 a continous flight record was achieved with 37 hours and 55 minutes on a L25aI. On 24th of July 1930 Wolf Hirth tried to cross the Atlantic Ocean with a L25aI, starting from Berlin-Staaken. With several interruptions, Hirth reached Island on August, 1st 1930, where he had to stop his approach due to bad weather. Elly Beinhorn started from Berlin-Tempelhof on January, 4th 1931 heading for West Africa Due to oil trouble she had to perform an emergency landing near Timbuktu, where the aircraft was lost. A single L25aI was equipped with a cabin roof for the Nobile help expedition.
  
  Since 1930 the L25a was equipped with an Armstrong-Siddeley Genet engine. A single L25aIV got a special Genet with 74kW for the Europe-Roundtrip 1930. The L25aVI was finally equipped in 1930 with BMW X engines.
  
  Since 1931 the a-series were changed to the b-series with improved standards. Engine versions again were the Daimler F7502a with 17,6kW (L25b), the Salmson AD9 with 29,5 kW (L25bI) the Armstrong-Siddeley Genet with 63kW (L25bIV) and the BMW Xa with 44kW (L25bVI). The L25bVII was equipped with a 51kW Hirth HM60 engine, the L25bVIIR with the 59kW Hirth HM60R engine. The L25bXI was finally equipped with a Poboj R engine of 62kW in 1931. Structural changes were made on the L25bf, which was only equipped with the Hirth HM60/60R engines. This version had a smaller wing and a slightly modified fuselage. L25bfVII and L25bfVIIRs are known.
  
  In 1931/32 the L25c was put into production. This series had an improved fuselage and got a new wheel construction. The L25c was available with 44kW BMW Xa engine (L25cVI), Hirth HM60 or HM60-R1 engine (L25cVII and L25cVIIR) and with Poboj R engine (L25cXI). The Poboj R engine was also used on the L25cfXI with smaller wing. The British Klemm company aquired a license for the L25c and started production of this aircraft for the UK market between 1931 and 1933 at London.
  
  In 1933 the L25d-series were introduced. The L25dII was the first Klemm aircraft to be equipped with Siemens Sh13a engines of 65 kW. Like the L25c, the L25d had an increased fuel capacity of 90 litres. The most successfull L25-series became the L25dVII or L25dVIIR with Hirth HM60 or HM60R engines, which achieved several prices between 1933 and 1936
  
  The final L25-series was the L25eVIIR. This type was equipped with 59kW Hirth HM60R-2 since 1934. Production of this last L25 type ended in 1936.
  
  While the L25 was built as a two seater aircraft, a three-seated version was sold as VL25 since 1928. The basic L25I and L25aI with Salmson AD9 were first converted to the three-seated VL25I and VL25aI. The L25a was also equipped with the Siemens Sh13a and converted to a three-seater VL25aII, as well as with a Argus As8 engine to a VL25aV. Only a few of these were built. Only the Hirth engined L25cVII and L25cVIIR were used for three-seated VL25cVII and VL25cVIIR version of the c-series.
  
  A total of about 600 to 700 L25 and VL25 aircraft were built during the years between 1927 and 1936. Most of them still flew at beginning of WWII. Further aircraft were built at the British Klemm Company at London between 1931 and 1933 and by the Aeromarine in USA under license agreement.

• Klemm L26,

  Historical Data:
  In 1929 Klemm improved the L25 sturcture for stronger engines. While the outside appearance of the aircraft was commonly unchanged, this aircraft got a new type designator L26. Like the L25, the L26 was produced until 1936 and about 50 aircraft of this stronger powered version were built by then.
  
  The initial series L26 and L26a were equipped with 61kW Siemens Sh13 (L26II), 70 kW Cirrus Mk.III (L26III), 70 kW Argus As8 (L26V) and 92kW De Havilland Gipsy III (L26aX, only single a-series aircraft built). The L26afV was equipped with a 88kW Argus As8A-3 and got the smaller wing of the L25a.
  
  Perhaps only one L26b was built. This was a seaplane version with the 88kW Argus AS8A-3. It was designated as W-L26bV. This aircraft was used by Ernst Udet for the film "SOS Eisberg" in 1932 at Greenland.
  
  The L26c series was started in 1932. The Argus As8A-4 equipped L26cV became the main series of the L26 production. This aircraft was also available as a seaplane version as W-L26cV. The DVL used two L26cV for a coupled pair of L26 with two engines during the 30s.
  
  In 1931 Klemm started to develope metal constructions instead of the prior wooden constructions on the L26. Those first metal Klemm series were designated L26s. The were available with the classical long wing, as well as with the shortened wing as L26sf-series. A single aircraft was equipped with a 110kW Siemens Sh14A for the Europe Roundflight of 1932.
  
  Special three-seater-series were supplied with the VL26-series since 1930. All of them were built in the classic wooden construction and were available with the typical Klemm engines. Some of these aircraft were also equipped with a cabin roof later.

• Klemm L27 / FL27,

  Historical Data:
  The L27 was an improved L26 aircraft in wooden construction with fabric covering. The first L27 was built in 1929. It had an increased wing span and a longer fuselage than the L26 with three seats. Only four L27 aircraft were built with different engines, the L27III with a 70kW Cirrus III engine, the L27aV with an 88kW Argus As8A-3, the L27aVIII with a 92kW Cirrus Hermes IIB and the L27aIX with a 92kW DH Gipsy II.
  
  These sport aircraft were later converted into light freighter aircraft and designated FL27. The pilot of this single-seated aircraft was seating on the rear seat, while the forward seats were removed for the freight compartement. Also the freighter version was not sucessfull and the developement of the L27 stopped after a total of four aircraft.

  Historical Data:
  Only a single L28 was built. Like the L26s the L28 was also built with a metal construction and a fabric covering. A lot of aerodynamical improvements were made on that type, i.e. a NACA-cowling was introduced and the undercarriage was covered in an aerodynamical covering. Nevertheless the aircraft was difficult to fly and the single aircraft was delivered to Liesel Bach not earlier than April 1934. The single D-2495 burnt during a crash landing in the same year. The L28 was the first Klemm aircraft to achieve a speed of more than 200 km/hrs. Its dimensions fits with the L26sf series.

  The L30 was developed as a further step of the L25. The two-seated aircraft was equipped with a 51kW Hirth HM60 engine. Compared to the L25, the L30 got a shorten wing span. As the performance of the prototype was not better than the L25 itself, finally this developement was stopped. The prototype was later used as a testbed for the Argus As16 engine.

  Historical Data:
  The KL31 was a new aircraft design which was equipped with a cabin roof for the first time. The developement of this aircraft was headed by Lusser. Two different engine versions were offered, the KL31V equipped with a 88kW Argus As8A-3 and the KL31aXIV with a 110kW Siemens Sh14A engine. The advanced KL31ab was equipped with landing flaps and NACA cowling, while the KL31a was missing both. The fuel tanks were capable of 160 litres. A total of 30 aircraft were built between 1930 and 1935, of which one was sold to South America.

• Klemm KL32 / British Klemm Eagle

  Historical Data:
  The KL32 was specially designed for the Europe-Roundflight of 1932 by Lusser. It was similar to the KL31, but instead of a metal frame the KL32 again used a wooden frame and covering. It was equipped with landings flaps, the vertical tail was movable in flight and the undercarriage got an aerodynamic covering. A 150 litres fuel tank was enclosed in the center wing section.
  
  Three aircraft were used for the Europe Flight 1932, one KL32XII with a 121kW Hirth HM150, D-2328 which was flown by Wolf Hirth himself and one KL32XIV with a 110kW Siemens Sh14A engine. The third aircraft was a KL32X with a 92kW De Haviillland Gipsy III. While the Siemens engine became the engine equipment of the initial KL32-series, the KL32XII and the KL32X were reengined with the 110kW Argus As8R and designated KL32VR later.
  
  Compared to the three contest aircraft, the initial series KL32a was missing the flaps, the NACA cowling and the undercarriage covering. Karl Schwabe was using a KL32aXIV for his Africa flight in 1934 to Cape Town. Production of the KL32 was stopped in 1935.
  
  Since 1934 the KL32b series was under production. This version got a stronger 118kW Siemens Sh14A-4 engine and some smaller fuselage changes.
  
  The KL32 design was also taken over by G.H. Handasyde. He adapted the design to the demands of the British market and equipped it with a DH Gipsy engine. In his British Klemm Aeroplane company, Handasyde started the UK based production of this aircraft.

  Historical Data:
  Only a single L33 was built in 1933. In contrast to most Klemm aircraft the L33 was equipped with a highlevel wing. A DKW P car engine was used in that experimental aircraft. It seems, that this aircraft was a special design of Lusser for the DELA 1933.

  Historical Data:
  The L35 or KL35, as it was called later, was one of Klemm's most sucessfull aircraft designs. It was based on the L25 and had a thinner wooden wing than the original L25. In contrast to KL32 the KL35 did not have a cabin or landing flaps, but the undercarriage had an aerodynamical covering.
  
  In contrast to the prior engine designators, the KL35-series got continous letter designators. A total of three KL35s were converted to seaplanes for experimental and record flights. These KL35 were designated W-KL35. The KL35C developement was stopped prior to first flight and was finally continued as KL106.
  
  A KL35B D-ERLQ achieved the altitude record of 8303 meters on October, 18th 1938. In seaplane configuration W-KL35B the same aircraft achieved a speed record of 228,7 km/hrs over 100km distance and of 228,0 over 1000km distance with Klemm chiefpilot Kalkstein on September, 11th 1938.
  
  The KL35 was built between 1935 and 1941. This aircraft was also used by Luftwaffe as a trainer aircraft. It was also exported to Sweden, Romania, Lituvia, Hungary and Slovakia. The Swedish Air Force bought 75 Klemm KL35D training aircraft in 1940 and used them as SK15 until 1947.

  Historical Data:
  The KL36A was developed for the Europe Flight of 1934. The contest aircraft was equipped with automatical aerodynamical flaps. The fuel tank was capable for 230 litres and the aircraft was equipped for instrument flight rules. The prototype crashed in 1934 at Boeblingen during test flights, killing the Klemm pilot Marczinsky. A total of four KL36 participated in the Europe Flight 1934 (D.IJIP, D-IDIR wiiith Argus As17A and the D-IHEK, D-IBAV with Hirth HM8U).
  
  After the Europe Flight 1934 a simplified KL36B was developed for serial production. This aircraft was missing the flaps, but was equipped with the covered undercarriage. No serial production of this type was initiated. The 7th prototype of the KL36B D-IUHU was the only Klemm aircraft to be equipped with a retractable undercarriage. (Other KL36Bs were D-IDTA and D-IYLA)

  The KL104 design was started by Klemm. It was the only two-engined aircraft design of Klemm and with its five seats the largest Klemm aircraft. Most parts of the design were finished by Friedrich Fecher at Boeblingen, when he moved to the Klemm subsidary at Halle in 1936. Hanns Klemm transfered the further developement of this aircraft to the Halle facility. After Klemm reduced his influence upon the Halle facilities and they became independent as Flugzeugwerk Halle GmbH, the design was renamed into Fh104.
  
  The Fh104 performed its first flight in 1936 and serial production was initiated in 1937.

  Historical Data:
  A total of 11 prototype aircraft V1 to V11 of the KL105 were built during 1938 to 1939. In contrast to the prior angular fuselages of the older Klemm aircraft, the KL105 was built with glued wooden sandwich panels giving the fuselage the oval shape.   Historical Data:
  The KL107 was a strengthened KL105 with additional landing flaps. Just six aircraft were built before the breakout of WWII (D-ENQR, D-EVNV, D-EXKL, D-ESKL) when the production came to a sudden end.
  
  After WWII the Boelkow GmbH took over the KL107 design and started a post war serial production of the KL107. The initial KL107A was based on the Klemm KL107 of 1942. The prototype D-ECAD flew first in September 1956. While the KL107B just differed in the engine, the KL107C got a wider fuselage and went under production in September 1959. Boelkow GmbH improved the KL107 during 1961 to the Boelkow Bo 207 standard, which was produced between 1961 and 1966.
